Henri,

I've done some similar simulations, the results of which can be seen at

http://www.datasync.com/~rsf1/binaries.htm

The distance one should use in such modeling is NOT the distance
from the binary to Earth, but rather the distance from the binary to
what I'm calling John Fox's extinction distance.

This is, of course, the same John Fox who measured the relative
speed of forward and backward gamma rays emitted from neutral
pions, taking full account of extinction effects, and found results
in complete and total disagreement with emission theory.

For the crab pulsar that distance should be on the order of one
fourth the Earth-Moon distance.

An executable version of the c+v light curve generating program
(if your computer doesn't operate too fast) is online at

Jerry,

I don't have the Filippas & Fox Pi(0) meson paper on hand but
found Fox's comments about it of particular interest.

Follow my link:
http://imaginary_nematode.home.comcast.net/papers/Filippas_Fox_1964.pdf

"The more recent experiments on moving sources of gamma
rays have already been discussed by Filippas and the author(45)
who showed that only their experiment on the speed of the decay
gamma rays from pi(0) mesons was free enough from
complications due to extinction to qualify as evidence against
the emission theory.(46)

This, of course, means that they found legitimate reason to be
skeptical of earlier work such as that of Alvager et al. (1964),
but they considered their own work to have properly accounted
for extinction.

Likewise, please check out Brecher (1977), whose pulsar work
takes into account extinction effects, and is thus free of the
criticism that affects de Sitter's analysis. Follow my link:
http://imaginary_nematode.home.comcast.net/papers/Brecher_1977.pdf

(46 - Footnote) The fact that this experiment suffered from as
much extinction as it did is because at the time it was not
fully appreciated to what extent gamma rays are also subject
to extinction. Uncertainty about how to estimate the effect
for gamma rays delayed publication of the experiment for
many months.

John Fox, Evidence Against Emission Theories, Am. J. Phys.,
33, 1, (1965), pp.14-15.

It seems to me that Fox could be saying that the jury is
still out on extinction, and thus on the emission theory.

No, it's pretty clear that Fox, who was a strong and effective
critic of de Sitter's and Alvager's analyses, has shut the door
on emission theory.

Jerry

Dear Jerry,

Its been a while, but I think Brecher did not account for extinction.
(Correct me if I'm wrong on that.) Best I recall, in 1977 he used a
c+/-v path equal to the distance between the variable and
the earth. I know for sure that he did it for gamma-ray bursts.

Well, you can read his paper for yourself by following my link.
http://imaginary_nematode.home.comcast.net/papers/Brecher_1977.pdf
After you are up to speed on his 1977 paper, we can discuss
his methodology.

Maybe we can yell and scream at each other a bit for fun? :-)
As you observed, some of us here are into insults...

It has long been my impression that Fox was a secret
Ritz admirer but knew how to keep on getting his funding.
More on that later.

Jerry
