Re: What is this newsgroup really about? Newcomer question

hello -

I'm a working physicist who has spent very little time
on usenet. I looked at the posts in this group
expecting to see discussions about current research
in special relativity, general relativity, and field theory
by other physicists and mathematicians.

sci.physics.research is moderated, and so will be a better
"window".

Additionally, you could periodically visit one of the archives,
to see which papers have recently been posted. Such as:
http://xxx.lanl.gov/

Instead, I found a lot of posts by non-scientists

I'm a mechanical engineer.

that seem to concentrate on crackpot theories
'refuting' relativity. Since SR and GR have long been
proven

Not "long been proven", since you cannot prove anything in
science. But "withstood 100 years of attempted disproof, and the
domain of applicability is well established and still being
constantly refined" is certainly correct.

and are staples of scientific and engineering fields
from astrophysical observation to satellite clocks,
I don't understand what is going on here.

There is no where else that one can go. The ones that concern
you would likely have been sitting at bus stops conversing with
themselves 20 years ago.

Is this group the equivalent of the flat-earth society?

Yes and no. As some have pointed out this group was partly
created to attract some of the "noise" away from other groups.
With the group's name, we do get some newbies with malformed
notions that they obtain from popular press relating to
relativity. And occasionally we do get a good discussion going.

Are any responsible discussions going on here.

Yes and no. I have found that my "tools" are significantly
sharpened on the hard heads that post here.

I'd recommend another newsgroup, or tolerance for the background
noise. If you've got questions, ask them. If you have a few
moments to scan for new posts that haven't gotten a reasonable
answer, answer. If you enjoy stroking those people with
Tourette's and/or Asperger's syndrome, we have those too.

Welcome or Goodbye. You choose.

David A. Smith
