Relativity's total energy equation can settle the M&M null debate.
Energy is an observed phenomenon. MMX result was a reality. Thus, it
is not likely energy equation has anything to do with the MMX null
result.
M&M in the 1880's looked for ether drift as they sent light upstream
and downstream on their apparatus. They were testing the equation for
the fringe difference:
fringe difference = f*tdown - f*tup = f*L/(c-v) - f*L/(c+v)
where f is the frequency and v = 30 km/s of the earth's orbit and L
the arm length.
At that time frame, the speed of light in vacuum was assumed to be
constant in the medium of the Aether. The concept is similar to
today's point of view except that today the speed of light is
constant without the medium of the Aether.
Thus, MMX was looking for the time difference in return time between
the detected photons after bouncing off their respective mirrors. With
the rotating platform of the MMX setup, there must be an orientation
that would result in one arm exactly perpendicular (position vector) to
the earth's moment (velocity) in the medium of the Aether. In this,
it was thought possible to measure such speed by looking at the
interference pattern of the two beams of light since this interference
pattern tells the difference in arrival time. Mathematically, we have
** T1 = 2 L / c
** T2 = L / (c - v) + L / (c + v) = 2 L / c / (1 - v^2 / c^2)
Where
** c = Speed of light in the medium of the Aether
** v = Earth's speed in the medium of the Aether
** L = Length of arms
** T1 = Arrival time of photons not along v
** T2 = Arrival time of photons along v
So, the difference in arrival time is
dT = T2 - T1 = (2 L / c) (v^2 / c^2) / (1 - v^2 / c^2)
Of course, the result was that (dT = 0) in every orientation. Since
the same experiment was conducted over a period of time, the chance for
the earth to be exactly stationary in the medium of the Aether is nil.
MMX only proves that the simple model of light traveling in the medium
of the Aether if exists is wrong or in need of modification.
In 1905 Einstein wrote special relativity to explain the surprise
result that is still being argued today.
One hypothesis to explain the null result was the Lorentz transform.
Its conception predated Einstein's 1905 papers by about 8 years.
So today we have relativity
and today relativity has the total energy equation. It can be written
and factored as (with p = mc)
E = sqrt(m^2c^4 + m^2c^2v^2) = mc*sqrt (c^2 + v^2)
The total energy equation has to be seen as a prescription for the
method of combining c and v in the term
V = sqrt(c^2 + v^2).
This type of nonsense was exactly what Einstein was doing in his 1905
paper on relativity.
But then V doesn't care whether it's upstream or downstream, i.e. +v
or -v. It also says relativity says V equals c and v when added at
right angles.
So then the fringe equation becomes
fL/V - fL/V = 0 or
f*L/ sqrt(c^2 + v^2) - f*L/ sqrt(c^2 + v^2) = 0 in any case.
Therefore it seems clear that the fringes cannot shift if you believe
relativity's total energy equation.
This is Voodoo math. You have learned very well from Einstein himself.
