Is there any online sources that talks of comparing realtivity to lorenz contractions and also string theory? Seems like 'space-time curvature' should be chucked away. Or is it just because its a useful mathematical model / learning feature, of are they trying to say thats what we should think physically exists?

You're comparing apples to oranges when talking of relativity to string theory. And be warned, what we consider "sensible" is a poor metric for judging the Universe. Why do you have an issue with curvature?

For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.
