Anyone with more knowledge of GR, please comment:

I make no claim of 'more' knowledge of GR. However, it is well known,
Einstein's original formulation of GR had issues, eg Kretchmann pointed
out - and Einstein eventually agreed - that the principle of general
covariance had no physical content. Bottom line is that our knowledge of GR
has moved on since Einstein's time, and regardless, of if he thought gravity
was space-time curvature, or not, that is now not the general consensus.
Indeed it is hard to think of what else the EFE's could imply ie its basis
is the metric is a dynamical variable which intimately connects geometry and
physics. But opinions seem to vary eg see the following from the math

Thanks
