.... much to his chagrin. I don't know the whole story, but the
test masses configured were sent away. He identified the main
reseracher on the Chinese team, and I have seen nothing come out
of it / them.

Nothing like having the "prize" snatched away...

Of course if one thought he was insufferable now...
