I had overlooked this:
This opens the vista of interstellar and intergalactic travel. The
limiting factor is the availability of energy.
Actually, already SRT allows interstellar travel, in principle. As Einstein
explained in 1905, c plays the role that infinite velocity plays in
Newtonian mechanics: at that speed, astronauts don't age anymore as measured
by us, and interstellar distances become zero as measured in a frame that is
co-moving with them.
Sayint that light "plays the role" doesn't cut it -- is not really an
explanation. HOW does it play the role?
The answer is that the space ship has an infintely great velocity. And
at that velocity will cover all of space INSTANTLY so that to the
Earth oberver (who sees his speed as c )time stands still and he
supposes space has contracted for the ship.
Cheers,
Harald
