In emission theory there is no
maximum possible speed .. so there must be some reason for it being
that speed [c] and not any other.
Agreed and I do not claim to know what it is - is that a problem?
Only if you refuse to allow SR the same priviledge, which is exactly
what you are doing when you claim that SR must invoke an aether or
'fail' to meet YOUR requirement of a 'physical explanation'.
When electrons in atoms change energy state the energy lost flies off in
the form of a photon. BaTh involves this reasonably well understood
physical process the only thing it fails to explain is just why it is
always at the same speed.
The picture in your mind that corresponds to the so called 'physical
process' is no more 'reality' than the equation that describes those events
which you consider 'non physical'.
Without an aether there can be no subsequent physical process because
there is nothing physical which can take part in a physical process.
Describing what happens as a 'physical process', or 'aether' or 'magic' or
with an equation does NOT change what happens.
The important thing is 'does it work'? The answer, for SR, is yes, within
its relm of applicability, it works.
If YOU are uncomfortable with equations, even though they are successful at
predicting behavior, that is not a physics problem.
Put
simply if the speed of light is not dependent on the physical processes
taking place in the source then what physical process is it dependent
upon? It is not simply a case of not understanding the physical process
as with BaTh it is the absence of anything which could possibly take
part in a physical process.
'Physical process' isn't physical.
It is just a model that you happen to feel comfortable with because it
'looks like' what you are used to seeing with your eyes.
That is modern scientific gobbledegook to justify the fact that now maths is accepted as a 'physics theory' when no one has the faintest idea what they are describing.
