Right. And that is _precisely_ what local Minkowski geometry does.
Assuming that spacetime is locally Minkowskian is no more complicated a postulate than assuming that space is Euclidean, and _EVERY_ older theory of physics implicitly did that. It's just not obvious to people rooted in their everyday lives and unable to look beyond their personal limitations.
