Proper quantities in SR

Hi,

It's been a while since I studied relativity and I wonder whether someone clued-up could provide feedback on the (seemingly unorthodox) use of proper quantities in special relativity.

"One can in fact express all of special relativity in terms of ‘proper’ quantities".

Sears and Brehme, Introduction to the Theory of Relativity (Addison Wesley, 1968) and
W. A. Shurcliff, Special Relativity: The Central Ideas (19 Appleton St., Cambridge MA 02138, 1996)

And finally a Wiki on proper time, where examples are provided for both special and general relativity:

How was the Hestenes journal paper received? Or alternatively is it true that 'all of special relativity be expressed in terms of proper quantities'?
Other thoughts with regard to the use of proper time, proper velocity, etc. at relativistic speeds would be appreciated to.
