I dunno. To me, "proper" always means "in the object's rest frame", so "proper velocity" ought to be identically zero (and therefore useless). I think the puns introduced are not a good idea.
I approach SR from a GR background in which 4-velocity is natural (it's purely geometrical: the tangent to an object's worldline), and I am not involved in teaching undergrads about relativity. I doubt this alternative approach would help any of the incorrigibly ineducable around here....
