If "important" means "capable of representing physical

name of the theory to "invariance",
Please provide reference, especially since he didn't seem
to adhere to this notion when he applied it in GR
There are many "hearsay" references to this on the web and
in various textbooks that I have.
The only original source reference that I have thus far been
able to locate is one to a letter to Zschimmer on 9/30/1921,
but I do not find a copy of this letter available online.
A carefully researched scientific biography, where the author
would have based his statements on readings of original source
material, would be a much more reliable reference than a
textbook; however I don't own any biographies. Tom mentions
Isaacson. I think Pais would be a likely (and of course, highly
reliable) source. I'll be visiting the library in the next
week, and if I remember, I'll try looking this up.
Pais's book didn't provide the definitive answer that I was
seeking. After checking several other sources, I am reasonably
sure that it was Felix Klein who coined the alternative term
"Invariententheorie" in 1910, and numerous hearsay sources
claim that Einstein preferred Klein's term to "Relativtheorie",
which was coined by Planck and Abraham in 1906. However, except
for the single reference by Gerald Holton to the 9/30/1921
letter to Zschimmer, which I have been unable to locate online,
I have not yet found any other references directly citing
original source material.

Gerald Holton is a respected historian of science, and I give
his writings very considerable credence.
Isaacson's biography of Einstein was not available at the library
that I visited.
