I think the main purpose is to look for things not predicted by the Standard Model. Finding the Higgs boson wouldn't be very interesting, although studying its detailed properties might be.
I was wondering, what is the relationship between
it and gravity, in GR?
None, I think. The Higgs interaction isn't the only source of mass in the Standard Model. Presumably the mass arising from it looks the same as any other kind of mass from a gravitational perspective.
What if Peter Higgs had died in infancy?
The particle would have a different name, but otherwise nothing would be different, I think. The idea occurred independently to several people around the same time.
