"Length contraction" applies ONLY TO A SINGLE, SPECIFIC PHYSICAL SITUATION. It is quite easy to get confused if you think it applies in general. You in particular do that repeatedly.
You can ALWAYS resolve your confusions by applying the complete Lorentz transform. Note that for non-parallel motions, as in your example, this gets complicated. BUT IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE RIGHT ANSWER.
