: Stress on the last syllable (unless you are British in which case you
: are supposed to murder the word by stressing the first syllable).

You have to put the em-PHAR-sis on the right syll-AH-ble.:-)

Sagnac is "Zon-yak", neither syllable stressed. French words
are not phonetic in English or American.

Say "cygnet", "fillet", "Peugeot" and "Chevrolet".

According to http://mw1.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/
"cygnet" sounds like sig-nit or sig-nut.
"fillet" has two pronunciations, fil LET and fil LAY, with
a variant spelling "filet".
Peugeot is per-zhoh, there is no English consonant for the French
'j' or 'g' just as there is none for the Welsh "ll". The Spanish
'j' is "h". Hey-zeus = Jesus.

To say "llan" (a Welsh church or parish), curl your tongue back
against the roof of your mouth and let it fall forward as you hiss,
followed by 'an'. It often comes out as "clan", but that is incorrect,
you need the slight hiss. In Scotland a church is a kirk (and roll the "r"-
kirrrk).
You'd have no hope with
http://tinyurl.com/awaad

but it IS British.
"The church of St. Mary in the hollow of white hazel trees near the rapid
whirlpool by St. Tysilio's of the red cave".

It is therefore incorrect to say any pronunciation is "British",
Great Britain is made up of Wales, Scotland, the island of Ireland,
England and surrounding smaller islands, Man, Jersey, Gurnsey,
Orkneys, Shetlands, Scillys etc., too many to remember then all.
The United Kingdom doesn't include Eire.

"Siobhan" (the Gaelic name of my nurse when I was in hospital) is
pronounced Shiv-AWN.
