Yes, most cranks do. Or Einstein. Or Newton. Or some other icon for
vainglorious self-gratification.
As do the "martyrs" who strap explosives to themselves and walk into
crowded markets. The greater the persecution in the present, they tell
themselves, the greater the glory in the hereafter.
It spares one the embarrassment of the stupidity of what one has just
done.
When he was tried for saying that
the earth rotated, no one respected him, everyone said he looked bad,
and poor Galileo finally said that the sun was in orbit around the
earth just so the court would not order him executed. The Ptolemaic
system of astronomy was fairly rational compared to the distance
contraction. If Galileo had died a martyr instead of recanting, maybe
people today would have more respect for his equations. At any rate,
I have a few weeks time not working, so I amuse myself by posting
here. Why does that trouble you so much, Eric?
