I think that Pete hasn't grasped the complexity of human relationships.
He is over-generalizing from the case of Androcles, who is both a nasty
person and a crackpot.
(1) The fact that Juan is nice to Pete doesn't mean that Juan is a nice
person. It doesn't mean that Juan is not a crackpot.
(2) The fact that Tom Roberts (or whoever) hurts Pete's feelings
does not mean that Tom Roberts is a crackpot.
I don't think that Pete is himself a crackpot, but he is more likely
to hang out with a crackpot who is nice to him than a noncrackpot who
is mean to him.
