Spaceman, these people are hopelessly confused....but then, what would one

What does it actully mean to multiply a group of objects by a negative number?
Mathematicians might perform magical tricks like this but I don't think it has
any physical meaning.
For instance if I have ten wogits in a box, I can multiply by 2 to get 20
wogits in two boxes.
Multiplying by -2 is a meaningles exercise because minus anything refers to
that which was removed from the positive domain. It is still equal to +2 in the
negative domain as you so wisely point out. So 2 x -2 is still unquesionably =
4.
I write this only with the complete confidence that
both of you have custodians or nurses who prohibit your
access to things like microwave ovens or sharp tools
which could be used to remove the cover from
one of the devices.
The potential on the secondary winding of the tranformer
found inside can be calculated by multiplying the
power mains voltage by the turns ratio. Anyone
who knows about AC power distrubution can show
you, perhaps on an oscilloscope the voltage
has both positve and negative excursions.
There is also a diode in a microwave oven which
can block the positive excursions should you
be foolish enough to grab it with your hand.
If the negative excursions of about 2000 volts
don't really exist, and the diode blocks the
posive excursions, then your caretakers won't have
to bury you.
Mark Twain on electrodynamics:
"The trouble ain't that there is too many fools,
but that the lightning ain't distributed right".
