I don't multiply by -1 to change direction.
I turn 180 degrees and I am still doing a positive
40 mph in the new direction.
(no multiplication (of my speed) occuring at all)

Why do you multiply for a change of direction?
How does "change of direction" get turned into
a multiplication at all?
Do you truly think 180 degrees = -1 ?

Jim, try this:

Multiplication by positive whole numbers amounts to repeated
addition, as shown:
20 x 5 = 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 = 100
35 x 2 = 35 + 35 = 70
21 x 2 = 21 + 21 = 42
-2 x 2 = -2 + -2 = -4, don't you agree?

positives in the other direction.

They cannot understand that multiplication by a NEGATIVE number is
just a maths
trick. It has no physical meaning.

Look at it this way:

Take two baskets, one of which contains 9 apples and 9 oranges.

We now transfer the 9 apples to the other basket, labeling them
negative, because they were 'taken away'.

We can multiply both the apples and oranges by 10 to get + 90 in each
basket.
Multiplying the contents by -10 doesn't have any intelligent meaning,
except
maybe to switch the orange basket the negative domain and vice versa.
We still
have positive numbers of both apples and oranges.

Squaring the contents of both baskets produces +81 square fruit,
which are not
much use to anyone. However when multiplied again by +9, we end up
with +729
CUBED apples and oranges that can be conveniently packed into boxes
or sliced
for making sandwiches. Apple sandwiches remain in the negative domain
and are
recommended for those who wish to lose weight.

We can also easily determine the square root of both the apples and
oranges to
be equal to +3. However, mathematicians and relativists insist that
the apples
will then have 'i's (pronounced 'eyes') in them. We know that
potatoes have
eyes so Einstein's relativity proves not only that fairies adjust all
starlight
to travel to little planet Earth at precisely c but also that
potatoes and
one-eyed apples are closely related. Thanks to Einstein, the
traditional meal
of fish and chips is soon to be replaced by fish and square rooted
