As Einstein wrote in 1907, due to the fact that inertially moving
systems undergo length and rate changes, an accelerating system does
too. If, as he did, we therefore take a series of inertially moving
systems, each moving a trifle faster than the prior one, and compare
the length and rate of the accelerating system to each successive one
of those inertial systems, then we can dispense with the accelerating
system and let spatial point locations be plotted by successive
inertial systems each moving infinitesimally faster than the prior
one.
Given that, then successive spatial points a set distance appart as
measured by any inertial STR system would appear successively
different distances apart as measured by such ever-faster inertial
systems. If we then let the inertial systems be moving in any and
all directions, as he did, and let a group of such points be joined by
a line, the line would be curved. If we then let all such points be so
plotted and then jopined by lines u, v, w etx; and then let the
ensemble of such linear strings be termed "space", it would then
follow that mathematical space would appear curved.
As to "time", in a footnote in his GR paper Einstein wrote,
"The unit of time is to chosen so that the velocity of light in
vacuo as measured in the 'local' system of co-ordinates is to be equal
to unity."
Accordingly, in GR, as in STR, the speed of light will always be "a
constant" since we hand-set our clocks to MEASURE it as c = 1.

<One does not need a high level of
brilliance or education to recognize that the two theories are
incompatible
and, as a result, cannot satisfy the Principle of Equivalence!>
One does have to understand the equations of STR and WHY they work,
and also has to have read Einstein's 1907 treatise, in order to
recognize that the restricted THEORY of relativity is contradicted by
its own equations, but the STR equations are compatible with the
tensor math of GR.
