It might seem strange to consider this plebian topic in a newsgroup
having to do with such an esoteric subject at the theory of
relativity, But, believe it or not, a controversy has arisen between
certain frequent posters in this newsgroup as to the result of
multiplying negative numbers, a topic generally treated in the U.S.
educational system before the 6th year (12-year-olds).
Just as a sociological note, I don't consider the knee-jerk
contrariness of a couple of well-known goofballs (Spaceman and "Henri
the Doctor Wilson") to constitute a controversy. There are certain
people who, if a person who carries the air of some scientific
experience says it's now the year 2008, will leap at the opportunity
to say that it is 2010 and that only those who cannot think on their
own and are stuck in some status quo propaganda campaign will believe
that it is 2008. It does not matter to these goofballs whether grade-
school children would mock them -- they have lived a lifetime of being
mocked and they are amply self-shielded against it.
In fact, it is IMHO counterproductive to call such activity
"controversy" because it gives insanity credence. There are a number
of novices and newbies who come to these groups and, because of the
utterances of the insane, come to the conclusion that there is
substantial controversy about even the basics of relativity, when in
fact there is not.
There is ample controversy about many scientific matters, but not in
the areas where the insane babble that there is, any more than there
is controversy about negative numbers and how to multiply with them.
To uncover the true agenda here, note that none of these cranks would
dream of walking up to a 5th grade math teacher and telling them that
their rules of handling negative numbers are illogical. They only tell
*physicists* that. Now ask yourself why this is so.
Don't be blind to the obvious.
