-1x-1=+1
So -1 can't be the square root of -1.
-2x-2=+4.
So-2 can't be the square root of -4.
One has to generalize the idea of number, just like one has to
generalize the idea of ruler in relativity. Electronic engineers
frequently use imaginary numbers. Show me an electronic engineer who
can't use imaginary numbers in any form, and I will show you a useless
electronics engineer.
I'll show you an "electronic engineer, professionally"
http://users.telenet.be/vdmoortel/dirk/Physics/Fumbles/Engineer.html
who can't even handle rational numbers:
http://users.telenet.be/vdmoortel/dirk/Physics/Fumbles/FALSE.html
or percentages:

How about that?

I do not believe that Androcles is or ever was an electronics
engineer. He may say he is an engineer, but I don't believe it.
Androcles may be some type of low grade technician. I don't
believe Spaceman could even be a technician. Androcles conceivably
could be. Androcles would not need engineering to solder joints. I
suspect this is what he meant by being an "electronics engineer."
My impression is that Androcles used to manage engineers and
scientists. It explains a lot of you think about it - just imagine he
believes that he is smarter than both groups because he was the one
who managed them, and everything makes sense.
Thomas E. Phipps!
This seems to be a common syndrome. The most stupid scientists go
into management. If they are unprincipled and corrupt, they claw their
way up. They blame their scientists and engineers when things go
wrong.
Of course, sometimes they are caught. And then they are only left
with the Internet |:-)
