The radius of the earth from the sun is approx 150 million km.
To work out the circumference of the Earth orbit, we can use 2(pi)r
2 x 3.141592654 (pi) x 150Million = 942, 477 796
So, that is almost a billion km's ! To calculate the velocity of an
object, we can use the equation v = d/t
Velocity = Distance / Time or (distance divided by time)
Question 1.
What is the velocity of an object if the object moved 10m in 10
minutes ?
A: The answer is .01666 m/s !! Yipeeee !!! If you got this anser then
you would be correct !
Question 2
What is the Velocity of the Earth ?
Well, we can do this a different way ! Because we know the radius of
the Earth from the sun, and now, the cirumference of the Earth's
orbit ! Yippee !! So. . .here goes, my fellow Boxlanders ! So then
I'll get my big cosmic knitting kit out, and pop it on the table, and
I'll reel out 942, 477 796 km's of string for us. Then i'll get my
little scissors and start making some cuts. You can help Sue, cause
your head is the biggest, so we can use you as a bobbin.
942, 477 796 divided by 12
= 78539816.33
---
78539816.33 divided by 4
= 19634954.08
---
78539816.33 divided by 7
= 280499.3.44
---
280499.3.44 divided by 24
= 116874.7267
---
116874.7267 divided by 60
= 1947.9121
---
1947.9121 divided by 60
= 32.46
Ok ! So here we have calculated the Velocity of earth ! But wait !
that is "madness", because All I've done, is take a distance, and cut
off 1/12th. Then cut 1/4 from that. Then cut 1/7th from that, then cut
1/24th from that, then cut 1/60th from that, then cut another 60th
from that.
And so I had this big line of string, which is now a whole bunch of
little strings on my table. . .and er, ,your trying to tell me that
the smallest piece of string on my table, is a Ver what ? A Velocity ?
But its made of string !
Its just a little piece of distance we chopped up from the big piece.
Remember ? It was wrapped around your head.
