The word is "convoluted". No, complex numbers describe (essentially)
a "potential" that is required, but not allowed, by a simple
formulation. They do a very fine job of approximating a 3D space, and
yield things like the trig functions.

to time it could be thought of as a slice

No. In QM, there *is* no separation, that is why "instantaneous" is
not an issue.
