Given that the curvature of space-time due to energy
in vacuum particles should be larger than is observed (Casimir force),
I would think that you are right to associate the existence of vacuum
energy
with the presence of matter.This might account for the fact that,
throughout the universe as a whole - which is mostly space -there
is so little vacuum energy compared to what quantum mechanics
says there should be.The question is this:if masses "switch on"
vacuum energy, how do they do it?
