It's something most people want to have. Otherwise, a journal could
publish articles anonymously. (When, say, applying for a job, one could
still provide a list of publications, and the journal could verify that
the applicant is the author.) As you say, many scientists are
scientists because they are interested in science, some appreciate the
(relatively small amounts of) money they get paid, but for many the
reputation is important, and the advantages that brings.
