Poles of scattering matrix

I compute S matrix for my system (electron scattering on atom) at a
number of energy points around a resonance. There the sum $\Delta(E)$
of eigenphases $\delta_j(E)$ experiences a jump of $\pi$ (many
channels might be open). To determine precisely the resonance
position, I could try to fit the determinant of S, which is
e^{2i\Delta(E)}, on the real axis with a Padé formula,
$\frac{P_n(E)}{Q_m(E)}$, and look for complex zeroes of $Q_m(E)$. But
I didn't implement the method yet and ask for suggestions to avoid
pitfalls or use better
techniques.

Thank you in advance
