Angular Characteristics of Photoelectron Emission

I came across a reference
(http://prola.aps.org/abstract/PR/v37/i10/p1233_1 ) describing
experimental results for the angular characteristics of photoelectron
emission in atomic gases. According to the abstract, the
photoelectrons are primarily emitted in the direction of the electric
field vector of the light (following a cos^2 law). Is anybody aware of
more references on this (or maybe can give me the full article as I am
not subscribed to APS), and may be also of how to interprete this
theoretically in terms of the particle model of light (which after all
is generally assumed to be applicable to the photoelectric effect)?
