A hole on the roof... [optics]

Hi.
A hole on a barn roof sometimes projects a highly defined dot of
sunlight at the floor or wall. Sometimes not, just flooding light in.
What does such high definition depends from? The
not-too-big,-not-too-small diameter of the hole, the thickness of the
tin roof, the distance projected ... ?
