Maybe you should not physically cut up the lattice,
but think of solutions as being composed as a large sum of
certain substructures.
These substructurs could be interpreted as lattice Feynman
diagrams. And they have an Euler charateristic that may
be something interesting. eg, the mumber of loops in
the diagram
I am working on lattice Feynman diagrams at the moment.
I hope to work something out over Christmas.
