"It turns out the Milky Way is more massive than we thought," said
Professor Gilmore. It now looks as though the Milky Way is the biggest
galaxy in the local Universe, bigger even than Andromeda. It was thought
until just a few months ago that it was the other way around."
Just coincidence that we live here, or some deeper implications?
Probably no deeper implications. Either the Milky Way is a bit bigger,
or a lot bigger. If it's just a bit bigger, then that's not much
different to the situation where it were a bit smaller. If it's a lot
bigger, then, all else being equal, simply due to the size it is more
likely that we are here than elsewhere. If I am Danish and live in
Copenhagen, which is the biggest city, I don't have to worry about that
being strange, since it is quite likely that I live there, just because
it is big.
If the Milky Way were special in some other way, then perhaps one would
have to think about it, but not if it is special just because it is big.
