I gave above the example of Kepler's polyhedron (polygon) scheme for
the planetary orbits (http://hyperion.cc.uregina.ca/~astro/
Kepler_poly.html ) to illustrate my point. As is evident from Table 2
on this page, this scheme also fits the observations quite well (apart
from being kind of 'beautiful' due to the symmetries involved), but it
is really not more than a mathematical ad-hoc representation of the
observations, not a physical explanation.
