I am resubmitting my reply which so far has not appeared:

It's straightforward, as e_0 is Farad/m which is really Coul/V*m so
e0*E V/m = Coul/m^2
Multiply by E again and get Volt Coul/m^3 = Joules/m^3
Use 1/2 as the averaging of E on the way up from zero.
