You might be a little more cautious than that.
There are folks out there selling student/educational/academic/
site licenced versions to people. And if you don't have the
credentials to show to Wolfram then the software isn't going to
run.
Ten years ago I was told I was buying a perfectly legitimate
sealed version of Mathematica. When it arrived it had stamps
on it "Only for use within University of Xxxxx." I asked for
my money back. He offered a few dollars for me to shut up and
go away. I refused. He said it was my problem. I rang up
Wolfram. Wolfram rang up the University. The University VP
rang me. He said that they liked their license agreement with
Wolfram and didn't want that to be revoked and he would make
very sure that everything would be done to my satisfaction,
that he had the student's visa in his hand and this would be
dealt with promptly. I mailed the package to the VP and he
mailed me my money.
So, be careful out there, most people are perfectly honest,
that's the only way the system keeps working, but we are
training some little vandals.
Asking for a scan of the Wolfram label on the box with the
license number and identifying info, ringing up Wolfram,
that should be enough for them to tell you all about that
particular box, without needing to break the seal.
