Asteroid impact.
 Consider Siberia, early 20th century.

In thousands of years of history....

Asteriod impact could be sufficent to cause fission in granite or rock due to
thorium etc.

There may have been a period when such collisions were common--consider that
the effect of Jupiter on asteroid stability is chaotic.
