 BTW Potter--in the early eighties, Tektronics made a
 "digitizer" based on CRT technology that could record
 events and ship them off in about 500 ns....

 The government bought many hundreds of these at $6000
 each to record event in underground nuclear tests...
 no instrument survived the blasts, but sent their data
 before....
