Horsepower

I'm having a "heated discussion" with someone about horsepower.

He insists that a car's transmission multiplies horsepower. E.G. that
if the engine is 100hp and 3rd gear is 3:1 that there will be 300hp
driving the car forward.

I know that's wrong, obviously, but i'm having a hard time finding an
online reference that states this clearly, and online is best because
that is where this "heated discussion" is.
