good luck on detecting alpha with plastic, it will stop at the surface,
should use zinc sulfide Takes a special design for alphas, they do not
penetrate far, only 1 inch in air !
you can pick up beta, but must be thin
With PMT and scintillator most use a light blocker, black paper and
electrical tape but that stops alpha and some beta
Use steel and you can still pickup gamma, and cosmic particles. I use a 1
gallon paint can.
There is no one fits all solution.
