I have been a big fan of plug-in gas electrics for may years. But today,
I do not think they are necessary because of big improvements in battery
technology. Today's lithium ion batteries can take a light wieght car
200 miles on a charge.
A cheaper alternative to both H2 fuel cells and plug-in is just to set
up battery swapping stations on the major interstate highway system. You
just whip in, and they pop out the dead battery and replace it with a
fully charged one. Five minutes max for a fully charged battery.
Battery electric vehicles can be made really cheap and light. No
transmission, or big iron engine block. Carbon fibre used for the frame
and body of the vehicle.
BEVs work hand-in-glove with wind energy, because they are charged at
night, when residential and city usage is off. And the technology exists
to start making them today, w/o the trillion dollars in R&D those
moronic fuel cells will cost.
