Hi Rick, You wrote: " that is a Message-ID and not a link. "
Stardard newsreaders make MIDs links when they're prefaced with news: ,
if your newsreader won't do that then just paste it into Google.

RFC 1036 says anything about sorting by Message-ID. >>
Although you are probably too ineducable to reallize this,
Google violates of RFC 1036 ( quoted below )
by omitting the References header when a title changes: <<
2.2.5. References
This field lists the Message-ID's of any messages prompting the
submission of this message. >> ... <<
If the original message does have a " References "
line, the follow-up message should have a " References " line
containing the text of the original " References " line,
a blank, and the Message-ID of the original message. >>

Combine the above with this from son of RFC 1036: <<
If the poster determines that
the topic of the followup differs significantly
from what is described in the subject,
a new, more descriptive, subject SHOULD be substituted
( With No Back Reference ). >> ^^^^^^

Where the term, " back reference " is defined as
the " Re: " tag at the start of a title,
...Not the References: line in the headers.
Thus one finds that Google violates RFC 1036
by mandating something more akin to this: <<
Because the title of a message MUST define the thread,
One MUST use " Re: " at the start of a title,
...Otherwise we MUST delete the References line. >>

Some Federal monies, funded by Federal income taxes, go to the states,
and some of that is used in state welfare programs. >>
So what ? I have exactly nothing to do with that.
No incluence at all.
