If Don Marquis were not known to be dead I would think he had moved to
Alaska.

I have a literary idea for you, tj: why not write a story ... no,
better, yet, a series... about a colorful character, loosely
autobiographical. Or maybe the colorful character could be the
protagnonist's sidekick. The point is, to either get one Holmsian or
Saki-ish plot device in each issue, and also to give your character to
spin one of your tall yarns about picking up petrified wood off the
sea floor and selling in in Japan -- that will be his trademark.
