WASHINGTON: Almost the entire Indian media and Uttar Pradesh's
distinguished legislators may have been taken for a ride by a
15-year-old boy claiming to have won a prestigious international exam
held by NASA to discover young international scientists.
NASA says it conducts no such exams and has never heard of Saurabh
Singh, the boy who appears to have perpetuated the hoax.
Why just blame the boy? India's media-on-steroids may well owe a mea
culpa for falling all over a story without taking even the elementary
step of e-mailing or phoning NASA or looking up its extensive website,
to confirm its authenticity.
On its website, NASA does [not] even list the so-called International
Scientist Discovery examination that Singh claims to have bested from
among 200,000 students.
"We have had extensive contact with India since the death of the
astronaut Kalpana Chawla, but to the best of my knowledge and
recollection, there is no such exam," NASA's News Chief Doc Mirelson,
told this correspondent, before referring to other public affairs
personnel in-charge of education.
