Peak Oil - Is there any possibility of burning coal in the automobile?

Basically, design some internal combustion engines that run on coal
particle, using nano meter
technology to break down coal and mix it with natural gas or oil if needed.

Also, since all fuel cells are based on natural gas/hydrogen/oil, why not
research into coal-based
fuelcell batteries?
