Entropy is not limited to non-living scenarios. Every more perfect lawn of
civilization in history that stopped growing in population and space
frontiers declined and fell into dark ages getting itself overwhelmed and
overrun by other far more fertile, more vigorous and vital and hardy human
groups reproducing like weeds.
Edward Gibbon (The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire)
noted more than 200 years ago that when the Mediterranean peoples lost their
fertility they also lost a lot more than just that. They lost their
"national genius." They lost their ability to comprehend how a lot of things
worked (knowledge and experience, including detailed written knowledge,
detailed explanation, that had been taken for granted for well over a
thousand years before). More and more of what passed for education was in
psuedo-sciences that disregarded every principle and finding and logic of
science before. What passed for society was rotted to the core. What passed
for economy...flattened.
From Will Durant's Lessons of History, his add-on to his The Story of
Civilization: "The third biological lesson of history is that life must
breed. Nature has no use for organisms, variations, or groups that cannot
reproduce abundantly. She has a passion for quantity as prerequisite to the
selection of quality; she likes large litters, and relishes the struggle
that pickes the surviving few.... She is more interested in the species than
in the individual, adn makes little difference between civilization and
barbarism. She does not care that a high birth rate has usually accompanied
a culturally low civilization, and a low birth rate a civilization
culturally high; and she (here meaning Nature as the process of birth,
variation, competition, selection, and survival) sees to it that a nation
with a low birth rate shall be periodically chastened by some more virile
and fertile group. Gaul survived against the Germans through the help of
Roman legions in Caesar's days, and through the help of British and American
legions in our time." (as of 1968) "When Rome fell the Franks rushed in from
Germany and made Gaul France; if England and America should fall, France,
whose population remained almost stationary through the nineteenth century,
might again be overrun."
As of the 21st century, it is in the process of being increasingly overrun
from mass migrations from North Africa and the Near East and will in time be
converted to an Islamic state. The price of an average of 1.7 children for
every 2 adults as of 2004. France is in deep trouble, but then so are almost
all of the European states.
Is Europe a hi-tech, high dynamic, civilization? No. The space frontier is
the measure. Europeans reach space, when they reach space, only at the
courtesy of the Russians and us Americans now. Soon they may reach space
only at the courtesy of the Chinese as well. The Chinese are gearing up to
go nova into the space frontier, but thanks to SpaceShipOne and Rocketplane,
and President Bush's so far dynamic push for manned space, these United
States might just beat them to it. English might not be the language of the
coming times of a growing American population populating a new frontier
though. A new language, Spanglish, might be that language thanks to another
mass migration of virile, fertile, macho, mostly deeply religious,
[neo-barbarian] peoples occurring South to North. Only in our case, unlike
Europe's, they are Roman Catholic based rather than Islamic based.
Physicist Gerard K. O'Neill (The High Frontier) envisioned a colonization
of solar systemic space itself that would solve at least the population
problem for thousands of years. Well within that time that titanic
population will find its way into the Universe at large, and find that
Universe at large to be many universes larger than this dark age's rabid
cosmological pseudo-scientists (Big Bang's fanatical priests) want it to be.
Will Durant's third biological lesson of history covers more ground than he
realized. Nature's "passion for quantity as prerequisite to the selection of
quality" covers far more ground than even he realized. There is that old
saying "one in a million." The million is prerequisite. One in a billion?
The billion is prerequisite. One in a trillion? The trillion is
prerequisite. One in a quadrillion....
The pseudo-scientists of Evolution these days talk of artificially
evolving a population controlled human species imprisoned upon Earth
(without no termination date to that imprisonment) upward per some idea and
model of evolution of the self-anointed expert scientist. That is not what
Nature does concerning Evolution. That is not where Evolution goes.
Humans will population O'Niell colonies with life all over this solar
system. There will be trillions, if not quadrillions, of humans populating
this solar system, diversifying, variating, different individuals and
different groups going their own ways regarding [revolution] and evolution,
all atop a massively growing pyramid of other species of life transplanted
from Earth to the space frontier, massively increasing in networked material
structures, infrastructures, energies, powers, complexity, and reach. The
[complex] infrastructures will reach a point of taking on a life of their
own. They will become spacefaring life in their own right essentially
separate from but symbiotic with the teeming cellular life (including
humanity) within them that altogether constitutes those higher dimensional
species of life. They will go about their higher dimensional lives wondering
why they can do so many things but can't seem to do so many others. We will
go about our lower dimensional lives within those higher dimensional lives
wondering why we can do so many things but can't seem to do so many others.
We will attain more than we ever dreamed of, of the Universe at large, upon
our level as part of that higher dimensional life's own growing energies,
powers, complexity and reach. And we will think we are in control. Upon our
level, within our dimensionality, we will be, along with all those species
of life out there that also happen to be more or less on our level as higher
infrastructure runs into even higher infrastructure, running into even more
highly placed complex infrastructures than it, each and every level of
networked complex cellular life thinking or believing itself to be in
control. Each and every individual thinking or believing itself to be in
control. And, largely within level, actually being in control. Unlike the
lower dimensional life, like we will one day be if we make it out there, the
higher dimensional life we will spawn of our own expansion and growth out
there never has an infinite Universe to travel in and play life out in until
it too spawns from itself an even higher dimensional, even more complex,
infrastructural network of life--plane of life--than it. Our descendents
will eventually be so far down the ladder with regard to these higher
dimensional living structures that on their level they will essentially be
thought of by the higher dimensionals as living 1-dimensional string beings
living in a 2-dimensionally flat infinite Universe.
The above is the way evolution works. No Nazi superman or woman. No
Utopia. No more perfect man or woman or society than a ever freer
frontiersman or worman or society: Ever growing in possibilities, chances,
windows of opportunity, ladders and, yes, hard tests, to be so.
