TiO2 is a white powder.

The red of the western permian exposure soils is due to iron oxide.

Fe2O3, ferric oxide is red.
Ferrous oxide, FeO2 is black.
Fe3O4, magnetite, is a reddish bluish black powder.

Thats right.
They are walking on a mixture of Silicon oxides, iron oxides and titanium
oxides with other stuff thrown in for good measure.
