My goof; I totally didn't "connect" with when you said red-wire paradox.
Guess my age is beginning to show.

As best I determined, it may have been a faulty detector.
I replaced all 3 with three new ones of the same type, and things seem to
work
pretty well now.

Still a volt or two on the red, but have given up trying to trace
it anymore. Guess it will remain one of those galactic level mysteries,
forever.

One of the joys in life is truly NOT tracing or de-bugging old wiring.
There should be a federal law that all houses have to have a full schematic,
when built or re-sold !
