Read W. Nahm's "Conformal field theory: a bridge over troubled waters,"
which you can access on the internet under those keywords (of the
title) or at www.th.physik.uni-bonn.de/th/People/werner. Nahm doesn't
include the date of his paper, but his last reference is in 1999, so
it's sometime between 1999 and 2005.
Nahm's paper is basically the story of Walter Thirring's Conformal
Field Theory told in about 54 pages, and tied in to advances like
string theory and history of people whom T. Y. Cao (1997) discusses -
but Nahm discusses them much more clearly and in an easy to read and
understand way.
Walter Thirring is (as of 2004 anyway according to one of his
biographies) Professor Emeritus of Theoretical Physics at the
University of Vienna.
