I agree fully with that. However scientific research (and not
scientific knowledge) is also indirectly affected by the funding, and
support (probably among other things) it receives from
politicians/general public. I'd argue that if science wasn't this
populized it would be harder to do research, although I cannot provide
much justification to this idea.
