Sounds to me as if Al was talking figuratively, about "divorcing"
chemistry.

I once worked with someone who had a manic laugh just like yours,
and he'd end each burst with a loud warthog snort, kind of like:
ahahaha... ahahanson SNORT! Very irritating and very weird.
