You'll also note that the lecture/article concludes with
a paragagraph about the history of the issue:

"Historically, however, it leaves much to be desired!
Attempts to interpret the Michelson-Morley result in
terms of an ether-based theory by FitzGerald, Lorentz
and others led to results with some striking similarities
to Einstein's."
